Instagram Marketing for Small Business
Instagram marketing for small business: how Instagram ranks posts, which formats work best, what to post each week, and how to turn followers into sales.
Posting more isn’t a plan
Most small businesses treat Instagram like a noticeboard. Post a product, post a sale, post a holiday greeting, hope something happens. Then nothing does, and Instagram gets blamed.
Instagram can still bring in customers without paying for every view. But it rewards a few specific things, and it helps to know what they are before you spend another evening making posts.
How Instagram decides who sees your posts
There isn’t one Instagram algorithm. Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has explained that Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels each rank content in their own way. A few points matter most for a business account:
- Your followers see you based on their habits. If someone often likes, comments on or messages your account, Instagram treats you as someone they care about and shows them more of your posts.
- New people find you through recommendations. Reels and Explore show content from accounts people don’t follow yet, based on what they’ve enjoyed before.
- Original content wins. In 2024 Instagram changed recommendations to favor original creators. New Reels are shown to a small audience first, and the ones that do well reach wider groups. When the same content appears more than once, Instagram recommends the original, and accounts that keep reposting other people’s work get left out of recommendations.
- Low-effort Reels get less reach. Instagram has said Reels that are low resolution, muted, bordered, mostly text or carry another app’s watermark are shown less.
The takeaway is simple: make your own content, made for Instagram, that gives people a reason to react.
Which formats work in 2026
Socialinsider analyzed 35 million Instagram posts from 2025. Average engagement rate (likes and comments divided by followers) came out like this:
- Carousels: 0.55%
- Reels: 0.52%
- Single images: 0.37%, down 17% on the year before
Rival IQ’s 2025 benchmark report found the same pattern: carousels beat Reels for engagement. So use both, for different jobs. Reels are how new people discover you. Carousels are how you teach, compare and convince the people who already follow you. Single photos are now the weakest choice for most accounts.
A simple weekly plan
Two or three Reels
Short, real and useful. Show the work: a job being done, a product being packed, a quick before and after, the owner answering a common question. Hook people in the first second, add captions because many people watch without sound, and film it yourself. Polished isn’t the point. Original is.
One or two carousels
Turn your customers’ questions into slides. “5 mistakes people make when…”, a price breakdown, a step-by-step guide, a customer story told in pictures. Carousels get saved and shared, which tells Instagram the post is worth showing to more people.
Stories most days
Stories are ranked by how close people are to you, so they work best for your existing followers. Use polls, question boxes and behind-the-scenes clips. Every reply opens a direct conversation with a likely buyer.
Reply to everything
Comments and DMs build the relationship signals that keep you in followers’ feeds. They’re also where sales start. Reply fast, and reply like a person.
Turn followers into customers
Followers don’t pay the bills. Make the next step obvious:
- One clear link in your bio to the page that matters most: booking, shop or quote form.
- A reason to join your list, like a first-order discount or a free guide, so you can follow up by email and SMS instead of hoping they see your next post.
- Calls to action in captions that match the post: “DM us ‘price’ for a quote” works better than “link in bio” on every post.
This is how organic content turns into revenue. Ascend Athletic’s Reels have passed 5M+ views, and alongside that content they’ve built a list of 100K+ email and SMS contacts.
Track what matters
- Reach from non-followers on Reels, to see if you’re finding new people.
- Saves and shares, the clearest sign a post was useful.
- Profile visits and link clicks, because that’s where interest turns into action.
- Leads or sales from Instagram, tracked with UTM links or a simple “how did you hear about us?” question.
Organic works best with the rest of the system
Instagram content builds trust. Ads put your best posts in front of more of the right people. Email and SMS turn followers into repeat customers. That connected system is what we build for our clients. Book a free 30-minute call and we’ll show you how it would work for your business.
