Local SEO: How to Show Up When Customers Search Nearby

Local SEO for small business in plain English: how Google ranks local results, how to optimize your Google Business Profile, get more reviews, and rank on Google Maps.

How Google decides who shows up locally

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for.
  • Distance: how far you are from the person searching.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, including reviews and links from other websites.

Google is also clear that you can’t pay for a better local ranking. You can’t move closer to every customer, but relevance and prominence are largely in your hands.

Step 1: Complete your Google Business Profile

  • Pick the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories for your other services.
  • Use your real business name. Adding keywords to it breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
  • Keep the basics exact: address or service area, hours, phone number and website.
  • List your services or products with short, clear descriptions.
  • Add real photos of your work, your team and your location, and keep adding new ones.
  • Post updates for offers, events and news, so your profile stays active.

Step 2: Make reviews a habit

Reviews feed prominence, and they’re also what customers read before choosing you. In BrightLocal’s 2025 Local Consumer Review Survey, 83% of consumers said they use Google to find reviews of local businesses, and 89% expect owners to respond to both positive and negative reviews.

  • Ask every happy customer, right when they’re happiest. A short link or QR code makes it easy.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad, quickly and like a person.
  • Never buy reviews or only ask the customers you expect to be happy. Google’s policies prohibit fake engagement.

Step 3: Make your website back it up

  • Show the same name, address and phone number as your profile.
  • Give each main service, and each main area you serve, its own page written for people.
  • Use your location naturally in page titles and headings, like “Truck Driving School in Brampton.”
  • Make it fast on mobile, with a tap-to-call button.
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data so search engines can read your details.

Step 4: Get mentioned around your area

Links and listings from local directories, your chamber of commerce, suppliers, local news and community sponsorships all build prominence. Keep your business details identical everywhere they appear.

How long does local SEO take?

Fixing your profile can show results within weeks. Building prominence through reviews and links takes months, and it compounds over time. That’s why local SEO pairs so well with ads: Google ads bring in customers now while SEO builds an asset that keeps paying off. For GC Truck Driving School, Google search sits at the centre of how new students find them.

Track it

  • Google Business Profile performance: calls, website clicks, direction requests and the searches that found you.
  • Rankings for your top service plus city searches, checked from different parts of your area.
  • Leads and revenue that come from organic search.
